The Philips 436M6VBPAB is a giant gaming monitor for console gamers

Philips has unveiled a new gaming monitor designed specifically for console gamers. The 436M6VBPAB is the first in the world to feature DisplayHDR 1000 certification and also boasts a low input lag, adaptive sync technology and a 4K resolution.
The 43inch display is Philips’ first foray into gaming monitors, but rather than enter the highly competitive PC gaming monitor market it has targeted console gamers.
The standout feature is its DisplayHDR 1000 certification. This requires that a display can show at the same time areas that are as bright as 1000nits or as dark as 0.05nits, for a theoretical 20,000:1 contrast ratio.
Philips achieves this by having 32 separate backlighting zones, the brightness of which can change in response to the picture. Note, the display doesn’t employ full array local dimming but uses edge LED backlighting.
The display also uses a VA LCD which inherently has a high contrast ratio compared to competing IPS and TN LCD technologies.
It also produces the full range of colours required by the HDR 1000 standard, with it hitting 97.6% DCI-P3 colour space coverage thanks to its quantum dot technology.

Also featured is adaptive sync technology. This is like AMD Freesync but without the branding, and it allows the display to eliminate image tearing and stutter. This will work with Freesync-capable AMD graphics card in PCs as well as the Xbox One console – support for this feature may arrive for the PS4 too.
Other key gaming features are a low input lag time of 21ms and low response time of 4ms. Meanwhile the 60Hz refresh rate and 3840 x 2160 resolution ensure you’re getting every pixel possible out of the latest consoles.
If you were wondering what distinguishes this large screen from a TV, well there’s the fact it doesn’t include a TV tuner. Instead Philips is picturing buyers using this display in conjunction with a set-top box.
It does, though, come with a remote and includes stereo 7W speakers with DTS Sound. Philips Ambiglow technology is also present, giving an enhancing glow to the underside of the TV.
